Flat (landform)

Landform Concepts

A flat is a relatively level surface of land within a region of greater relief, such as hills or mountains, and the word is usually used in the plural. It commonly appears in the names of specific places with this character, such as Yucca Flat and Henninger Flats, and the same term extends to other kinds of level ground, including mudflats and salt flats. The source lead does not itself explain how a flat forms; that mechanism, which differs by which kind of flat is meant, is left as a gap for depth work rather than guessed at here.
