Pingo

Landform Concepts

A pingo is an intrapermafrost ice-cored hill found in Arctic and subarctic permafrost regions, typically 3 to 70 meters high and 30 to 1,000 meters in diameter, with a roughly conical shape. It forms and remains stable only within permafrost, making it a distinctive periglacial landform rather than a product of glacial ice. More than 11,000 pingos are known worldwide, with the densest cluster, about 1,350 of them, found on the Tuktoyaktuk Peninsula in Canada.
