An ocean bank, also called a fishing bank or simply a bank, is a part of the seabed that is shallow compared to the surrounding area, such as a shoal or the top of a submerged hill. Much like a continental slope, the slopes of an ocean bank can cause upwelling as tidal and other currents intercept them, at times producing nutrient rich waters, which is why large banks such as Dogger Bank and the Grand Banks of Newfoundland are counted among the richest fishing grounds in the world.
