Inlet

Landform Concepts

An inlet is a typically long, narrow indentation of a shoreline, such as a small arm, cove, bay, sound, fjord, lagoon or marsh, that leads to an enclosed larger body of water such as a lake, an estuary, a gulf or a marginal sea. It marks a place where the sea reaches inland from a larger ocean or sea, and its shape and origin vary: some inlets are carved by glaciers, as with fjords, while others form on sandy coastlines where barrier islands separate the inlet from the open sea.
