Sarawak Chamber

Karst Caves and Sinkholes

Sarawak Chamber is a single cave room inside Gua Nasib Bagus, part of Gunung Mulu National Park in Sarawak, Malaysia, on the island of Borneo. It measures roughly 600 meters long, 435 meters wide and up to 115 meters high, and a 2011 laser survey put its volume at more than 9.5 million cubic meters, making it the largest known cave chamber on Earth by floor area and the second largest by volume after China's Miao Room. The chamber formed within the Melinau Limestone, a reef complex dating from the late Eocene into the early Miocene, through karst dissolution acting on rock whose folded anticline and syncline structure happened to leave an unusually large void once the surrounding stone dissolved away. Three British cavers, Andy Eavis, Dave Checkley and Tony White, discovered the chamber in January 1981 during the Mulu 80 expedition.
