Dedo de Deus

Inselbergs and Crystalline Monoliths

Dedo de Deus, God's Finger, is a granite peak in the Serra dos Órgãos range in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, on the escarpment between the cities of Petropolis and Teresopolis, visible from Rio de Janeiro city itself some 50 kilometers away on clear days. The range takes its name from vertical rock formations, carved by erosion, that resemble the pipes of the organs used in Portuguese churches. The peak reaches 1,692 meters (5,551 feet) and is sustained by a thick dike of Cambrian granite that resists erosion better than the surrounding Neoproterozoic rock, likely formed around 620 million years ago; considerable faulting combined with ongoing erosion produced the region's distinctive isolated granite peaks, among them Dedo de Deus and the neighboring Escalavrado, at 1,490 meters. This entity documents Dedo de Deus specifically as a geological formation, an isolated Cambrian granite peak raised by faulting and erosion in the Serra dos Órgãos.
