Kit Mikayi

Inselbergs and Crystalline Monoliths

Kit Mikayi is a rock tor rising about 120 meters in western Kenya, roughly 29 kilometers west of Kisumu near the Kisumu-Bondo road. Its name, from the Dholuo language of the Luo people, means the stone of the first woman or first wife, after a local legend that an elderly man named Ngeso spent so much time inside a cave within the rock that his wife called it his first wife; the formation's different sections are popularly read as representing a father and his three wives in a traditional Luo polygamous household. Kit Mikayi holds deep cultural significance for the Luo-Kakello clan and serves as a pilgrimage site, particularly for followers of the Legio Maria sect, who visit to pray and fast. UNESCO inscribed it as intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent safeguarding in 2019.
