Mount Wachusett

Inselbergs and Crystalline Monoliths

Mount Wachusett straddles the towns of Princeton and Westminster in Worcester County, Massachusetts, and is the highest point in the state east of the Connecticut River. Its name derives from a Native American term meaning near the mountain or mountain place. An automobile road open from spring to fall climbs to the summit, and the mountain is a popular destination for hiking and skiing, crossed by the 92 mile Midstate Trail and home to the Wachusett Mountain State Reservation; on a clear day its summit offers views that take in Mount Monadnock to the north, Mount Greylock to the west, southern Vermont to the northwest and Boston to the east.
