Home›Inselbergs and Crystalline Monoliths›All Inselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsBrowse ByAll Inselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsReference and ClassificationDevelopingIsolated rock hills and domes of resistant crystalline rock, most often granite or gneiss, left standing above a surrounding plain or range by the differential weathering and erosion that stripped away the softer rock around them, following the inselberg (bornhardt) landform class of standard geomorphology. Includes granite domes shaped by exfoliation (Half Dome, Stawamus Chief), isolated monadnocks and residual peaks rising sharply from otherwise flat terrain (Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Spitzkoppe), and granite spires and towers sculpted by the same differential weathering at a steeper, more dramatic scale (Cerro Torre, El Capitan, Torres del Paine). Belongs here: any isolated hill, dome or spire whose defining origin is the survival of resistant crystalline rock after softer surrounding rock eroded away. Does not belong here: a formation shaped by active dissolution of soluble rock rather than the differential survival of resistant crystalline rock (Erosional and Karst Formations), or one built from layered sedimentary rock (Sedimentary and Stratigraphic Formations).FactsAll Inselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonFormation OriginWell-attestedAn isolated rock hill exposed by differential erosion of surrounding softer rock. 1All Inselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsFilter Results152 entriesFormation FamilyAllBalancing and Split Rocks (5)Coastal Rock Formations (4)General Inselberg and Monolith Concepts (9)Granite Domes and Bornhardts (39)Granite Peaks and Spires (17)Monadnocks and Isolated Hills (11)Named Monolithic Rocks and Formations (65)Table Mountains and Tepuis (2)Formed By (Process)AllErosion (14)Glaciation (8)Karstification (1)Orogeny (56)Plate Tectonics (1)Weathering (20)DisciplineAllGeology (3)Geomorphology (128)Oceanography (2)Formation TypeAllBalancing and Split Rocks (5)Coastal Rock Formations (4)General Inselberg and Monolith Concepts (9)Granite Domes and Bornhardts (39)Granite Peaks and Spires (17)Monadnocks and Isolated Hills (11)Named Monolithic Rocks and Formations (65)Table Mountains and Tepuis (2)Protected StatusAllInternational Treaty Protected Area (3)Locally or Regionally Protected (16)National Monument or Landmark (14)National Park or Reserve (55)UNESCO World Heritage Site (9)WhereAllAntarctica (1)Argentina (2)Aruba (1)Australia (14)Brazil (10)Canada (5)Chile (3)China (2)Colombia (2)Eswatini (1)Georgia (3)Germany (1)Greece (1)Guyana (1)Hong Kong (2)India (5)Israel (1)Italy (1)Kenya (2)Madagascar (1)Malawi (1)Malaysia (2)Mali (1)Mauritania (1)Mozambique (6)Namibia (4)New Zealand (1)Nigeria (5)Norway (7)Pakistan (1)Portugal (1)Selangor (1)Singapore (2)South Africa (2)South Korea (2)Spain (1)Sri Lanka (5)Sweden (1)United Kingdom (15)United States (39)Venezuela (2)Wisconsin (1)Zimbabwe (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 52Paarl RockInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsPanola MountainInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsPedra Azul (Espirito Santo)Inselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsPedra da Galinha ChocaInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsPedra da GaveaInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsPedra do BauInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsPic BobyInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsPidurangala RockInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsPiedra del CocuyInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsPietra di BismantovaInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsPillar (landform)Inselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsPilot Mountain, North CarolinaInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsPinnacleInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsPreikestolenInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsRemarkable RocksInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsRib MountainInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsRitigalaInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsRiyom RockInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsRough TorInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsSanqing MountainInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsSavandurgaInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsSentinel DomeInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsSibebe RockInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsSlover MountainInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsSpitzkoppeInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsSplit Apple RockInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsStac PollaidhInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsStawamus ChiefInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsStone MountainInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsStone Mountain, North CarolinaInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsSugarloaf Mountain, MarylandInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsSugarloaf Mountain, Rio de JaneiroInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsSuilvenInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsTepuiInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsThicketty MountainInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsTor (rock formation)Inselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsTorres del PaineInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsTrango TowersInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsTrollpikkenInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsTrolltungaInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsTrollveggenInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsUlsanbawi RockInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsUluruInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsUlvetannaInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsVedauwooInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsVingerklipInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsVixen TorInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsWave RockInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsWillis MountainInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsWulingyuanInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsYapahuwaInselbergs and Crystalline MonolithsZuma RockInselbergs and Crystalline Monoliths← Previous12Sources1.
