Valle Antrona

Valleys

Valle Antrona is an Alpine valley in the Pennine range of northern Italy, in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola in Piedmont, drained by the Ovesca River, which joins the Toce at Villadossola. About 1,140 people live across its 141.43 square kilometers, spread among the three municipalities of Antrona Schieranco, Montescheno and Borgomezzavalle. According to local tradition a landslide at the start of the eighteenth century dammed the valley and flooded the town of Antronapiana, forming Lake Antrona in 1642, and the valley was long worked for gold and mica, with gold hosted in mica schists and gneisses at grades of about 5 to 10 grams per ton alongside quartz-based lodes bearing sulphide and iron sulfoarsenide minerals. Its highest peak, Pizzo d'Andolla at 3,656 meters, sits on the border with Switzerland, and the valley today centers on the Alta Valle Antrona Natural Park and tourism.
