Schächental

Valleys

The Schächental, or Schächen Valley, is an alpine valley in the canton of Uri, Switzerland, formed by the Schächen river and extending about ten kilometers east of Altdorf to the Klausenpass at 1,948 meters, which connects to Urner Boden and on to Glarus. Three villages lie along its length, Bürglen, Spiringen and Unterschächen, and a side valley called Brunnital branches south from Unterschächen toward the steep north face of the Gross Windgällen. After leaving the valley the Schächen flows past Altdorf and joins the Reuss at Attinghausen; the valley inhabitants played a prominent part in the formative struggles of the Old Swiss Confederacy against Habsburg rule, and the sixteenth century historian Aegidius Tschudi placed the legendary William Tell's origins here.
