Devil's Gorge (Eifel)

Gorges and Canyons

Devil's Gorge, known in German as Teufelsschlucht, is a narrow rock fissure between one and five meters wide on the eastern edge of the Ferschweiler Plateau in the South Eifel Nature Park, near Irrel in the Rhineland-Palatinate region of Germany. It formed about 10,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age, when Lower Jurassic Luxembourg Sandstone resting on impervious keuper beds was undercut by weathering and shattered by frost, causing large rock collapses that opened the fissure. Large boulders scattered across the surrounding plateau slopes still mark the ancient collapse, and the steep rock faces of the gorge now draw hikers and tourists to the area.
