Ravenna Gorge

Gorges and Canyons

Ravenna Gorge is a roughly four kilometer long gorge in Germany's Black Forest, running as a narrow side valley off the Hollental up to the village of Breitnau within the municipality of Breitnau. A mountain stream drops through the gorge over two named waterfalls, the 16 meter Great Ravenna Fall and the 6 meter Little Ravenna Fall, and the gorge is spanned by the 37 meter high Ravenna Bridge railway viaduct. Historic features along its length include the Grossjockenmuhle water mill of 1883 and Saint Oswald's Chapel, built in 1148, and the nearby Hotel Hofgut Sternen once hosted Marie Antoinette in 1770 and Goethe in 1779; the gorge's name is thought to derive from the French word ravine.
