Geibikei

Gorges and Canyons

Geibikei is a ravine on the Satetsu River in Ichinoseki, Iwate Prefecture, Japan, formed where the river eroded Paleozoic limestone in the Southern Kitakami Mountains, cutting cliffs up to 124 meters high along a gorge about two kilometers long. Its name comes from a limestone formation said to resemble a lion's snout, and the ravine has been a National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument since 1923, selected among the 100 Landscapes of Japan in 1927. Visitors reach it on foot from Geibikei Station on the JR East Ofunato Line, and it is well known for ninety-minute pole-boat tours on which the boatmen sing during the return trip.
