A slot canyon is a long, narrow channel with sheer rock walls, cut mainly through sandstone or limestone by running water, with a depth-to-width ratio that typically exceeds ten to one and can approach one hundred to one; some are less than a meter wide at the rim yet drop more than thirty meters. Southern Utah holds the densest concentration in the world, with more than a thousand recorded slot canyons.
