Fox Glacier is an 11.7 kilometer long temperate maritime glacier in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand, the third largest glacier in the country at about 32 square kilometers including its tributaries. Fed by four alpine tributaries in the Southern Alps, it descends 2,600 meters to terminate near rainforest just 300 meters above sea level, making it one of the most accessible glaciers in the world and drawing about 1,000 visitors a day in peak season. The glacier has alternated between advance and retreat since the 1960s, with significant retreat underway since 2008.
