Severny Island ice cap

Glaciers and Ice Formations

The Severny Island ice cap covers roughly 40 percent of Severny Island, the northern of the two main islands of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago in the Russian Arctic. As of 2021 it spanned about 18,661 square kilometers, some 400 kilometers long and 50 kilometers wide, making it the largest glacier by area in Europe when Novaya Zemlya is counted as European, well ahead of Iceland's Vatnajökull at 8,100 square kilometers and Svalbard's Austfonna at 7,800 square kilometers. Mount Kruzenshtern, the highest point in the Novaya Zemlya region, rises along its western edge near the Glazov Glacier, and numerous outlet glaciers flow from the ice cap's center to the coasts, some ending in the Barents Sea and others in the Kara Sea; nunataks, exposed rocky peaks, project through the ice in places.
