Upsala Glacier

Glaciers and Ice Formations

Upsala Glacier is a large valley glacier on the eastern side of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, with its higher reaches lying in territory disputed between Chile and Argentina. It flows generally north to south with three lesser, east-flowing tributary glaciers, Bertacchi, Cono and Murallon, and its terminus lies at the Upsala channel of Lago Argentino within Los Glaciares National Park. Upsala Glacier is one of the region's most visited features despite being overshadowed in popularity by the nearby Perito Moreno glacier, and it is well known for a rapid retreat that has continued since it was first documented in 1810, with an especially fast retreat beginning in 2008 that was reported as roughly ten times faster than the preceding eight years.
