Schneeferner is Germany's highest and largest glacier, sitting on the Zugspitzplatt plateau in the Bavarian Alps just south of the Zugspitze, the country's highest peak. As of 2006 its two remaining sections, the Northern and Southern Schneeferner, covered about 39 hectares combined, but the glacier has been retreating steadily since 1980 at roughly 80 centimeters a year; the Southern Schneeferner shrank to just one hectare and was formally declassified as a glacier in 2022. The Northern Schneeferner still hosts a ski area, where operators have covered sections with tarpaulins since 1993 and trucked in snow from elsewhere, measures that have done little to slow the retreat.
