Peyto Glacier is a mountain glacier in the Canadian Rockies within Banff National Park, Alberta, about 90 kilometers northwest of Banff and reachable via the Icefields Parkway. It is an outflow glacier of the Wapta Icefield, which sits astride the Continental Divide, and glacial silt carried from it gives the nearby Peyto Lake its distinctive turquoise color, making the lake a popular tourist attraction. The glacier has been in dramatic retreat, losing an estimated 1,088.5 million cubic meters of volume between 1896 and 1966 and reportedly some 70 percent of its total mass since it was first studied, with systematic scientific monitoring in place since 1965 and an automatic weather station recording conditions there since 1987.
