Buxton Glacier

Buxton Glacier is a tidewater glacier on the north coast of South Georgia, flowing northeast between Heaney and Cook glaciers immediately south of Mount Skittle and terminating at Saint Andrews Bay. The glacier is currently retreating, and its withdrawal, together with that of the nearby Ross Glacier, is exposing a gravel beach. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1987 for three members of the Buxton family, Aubrey Leland Oakes Buxton, Baron Buxton of Alsa, Pamela Mary Birkin, Baroness Buxton of Alsa, and their daughter Lucinda Catherine Buxton, who visited South Georgia in March 1982. A king penguin breeding colony of more than 100,000 birds occupies the terminus area at Saint Andrews Bay.
