Bruggen Glacier

Glaciers and Ice Formations

Bruggen Glacier, also called Pio XI Glacier after Pope Pius XI, is a tidewater glacier in Chile's Magallanes Region and the largest western outflow of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Covering about 1,265 square kilometers and stretching 66 kilometers, it is the longest glacier in the Southern Hemisphere outside Antarctica and is named for the German geologist Juan Bruggen Messtorff. Unlike most of the world's glaciers, which have been retreating, Bruggen advanced sharply between 1945 and 1976, surging some five kilometers across Eyre Fjord to reach its western shore by 1962, cutting off Lake Greve from the sea and adding roughly 60 square kilometers of ice before stabilizing. It remains an advancing glacier today and can be reached by expedition cruise ships sailing up the fjord to its terminus.
