Danxia Landform

Named Rock Formations and Groups

The Danxia landform is a distinctive landscape found in southeast, southwest, and northwest China, made up of red bed formations marked by steep cliffs. It represents a unique kind of petrographic geomorphology developed from red colored sandstones and conglomerates that are largely of Cretaceous age. Because Danxia landscapes closely resemble karst topography, which forms in limestone terrain, but are instead carved from sandstone and conglomerate, they are sometimes described as pseudo karst landforms, shaped by a combination of internal, or endogenous, geological forces and external, or exogenous, erosional forces.
