Wensleydale is a valley in North Yorkshire, England, running about 25 miles west to east through the Yorkshire Dales within the Pennine hills. It takes its name from the village of Wensley, its former market town, while its older name Yoredale comes from the River Ure that drains it, and the valley in turn lent its name to the Yoredale Group of Carboniferous rocks recognized in geology. Addlebrough, 481 meters high, rises over the upper dale and Penhill, 526 meters high, over the lower dale, and the River Bain, reputed to be England's shortest river, flows through it. Most of Wensleydale lies within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the valley is widely known for Wensleydale cheese, traditionally made at Hawes, as well as for its waterfalls and scenery.
