Coverdale, North Yorkshire

Valleys

Coverdale lies in the far eastern Yorkshire Dales in North Yorkshire, England, named for the River Cover, a tributary of the River Ure, and runs south west from the eastern end of Wensleydale to its dale head at Park Rash Pass. Great Whernside stands to its south and Buckden Pike to its north, and a single track road, the only vehicle access into the valley, runs its length and crosses the pass to Kettlewell in neighboring Wharfedale. The dale name likely comes from a Brittonic word for the river meaning either hollow stream or streamlet, and its dozen or so settlements include Coverham, Middleham, and Melmerby, along with the ruins of Coverham Abbey, the 17th century Braithwaite Hall, and a maze attraction called Forbidden Corner.
