Arkengarthdale is a valley on the eastern side of the Pennines in North Yorkshire, England, running roughly northwest to southeast for about 11 miles as the northernmost of the Yorkshire Dales and a tributary valley to Swaledale, which it joins at Reeth. It is drained by Arkle Beck, with a valley floor around 1,000 feet above sea level, and its moorland sides were carved by glacial action during the last Ice Age. The dale's economy was built for over a thousand years on lead mining, and today rests on hill farming, grouse shooting and tourism; its architectural heritage was recognized in 1989 with designation as a Barns and Walls Conservation Area, and its moors host the annual Scott Trial cross country motorcycle endurance event.
