Kachelotplate is a sandbar in the North Sea off the German coast, west of the island of Juist, that was officially recognized as an island on 28 July 2003 once it stopped submerging at high tide. It measures about 2.5 kilometers long and up to 1.3 kilometers wide, covering 1.72 square kilometers with a highest point of 2.5 meters, and takes its name from the French word for sperm whale. Wind-formed dunes and developing vegetation now cover the island, which serves as a nesting site for many bird species and a refuge for seals, and as the youngest of the East Frisian Islands it may eventually merge with the neighboring island of Memmert over the coming decades.
