Cook Ice Cap

Glaciers and Ice Formations

The Cook Ice Cap, also called Cook Glacier, is a large ice cap on the Kerguelen Islands in the French Southern Territories, in the far southern Indian Ocean. Centered near 49 degrees south, it covers roughly 400 square kilometers and reaches an average thickness of about 400 meters, with some sixty outlet glaciers radiating from its central ice mass. The ice cap has been retreating, shrinking from about 500 square kilometers in 1963 to its present extent.
