This group collects the former Valleys of the Alps and Central Europe group's members lying in the central ranges of the Alps: nearly every valley of Switzerland, spanning the cantons of Bern, Graubunden, Ticino, Uri, Valais, Zurich and Aargau, together with the valleys of Lombardy in northern Italy that share the same central Alpine massifs, among them the Bernina, Adula, Lepontine and Bernese Alps. This central belt sits between the granitic western arc and the limestone-dominated eastern Alps, and its valleys are grouped together because Switzerland's own cantonal geography and the adjoining Lombard valleys form one continuous, well-documented mountain and drainage system distinct from its neighbors.
