Hebrides

Islands and Archipelagos

The Hebrides are the largest island archipelago in Scotland and in the British Isles, lying off the west coast of the Scottish mainland and divided into the Inner and Outer Hebrides. Together the islands cover about 7,285 square kilometers and held roughly 45,000 people as of 2011, with human occupation dating back to the Mesolithic period. Their geology ranges from Precambrian rock counted among the oldest in Europe to later Paleogene igneous intrusions, and raised shore platforms called strandflats appear to date from the Pliocene, reshaped afterward by Quaternary glaciation. Scottish Gaelic language and culture remain strong across the island chain.
