The Wiesental is a valley in the southern Black Forest of Germany, named for the Wiese river, which rises near the Feldberg at about 1,200 meters and flows some 55 kilometers southwest before emptying into the Rhine near Basel, Switzerland, at 244 meters elevation. The valley lies almost entirely within the Landkreis Lörrach, its largest towns being Lörrach, with about 48,000 residents, and Schopfheim, with about 19,000. Its upper section is built mainly of gneiss and granite, giving way near Zell to sandstone on one side and limestone on the other, and the Wiese's steady flow and steep drop made the valley one of the first industrialized regions of the former Grand Duchy of Baden, powering an early textile industry.
