Medes Islands

Karst Caves and Sinkholes

The Medes Islands are a small, craggy group of seven islets off the Costa Brava coast of Catalonia, Spain, near the town of L'Estartit. They form the submerged continuation of the Montgri massif, producing a karst landscape of tunnels, caverns, vertical walls and boulder slopes. The islands cover about 0.215 square kilometers and rise to a highest point of 75 meters. They are uninhabited and protected as a nature reserve, where scuba diving is popular but regulated.
