Acatenango stands in the Chimaltenango and Sacatepequez departments of Guatemala, near the colonial city of Antigua, reaching an elevation of about 3,976 meters, the third-highest peak in Central America. It is a stratovolcano built from andesitic lava flows and pyroclastic material, forming a twin massif with its smaller, highly active neighbor, Fuego Volcano, with which it shares a common base. Acatenango itself last erupted in the mid-twentieth century and is now considered dormant, while its slopes have become a popular overnight hiking destination precisely because they offer a close, elevated view of Fuego's frequent eruptions. This entity documents Acatenango specifically as a geological formation, a dormant stratovolcano paired with the active Fuego Volcano as part of a shared twin massif.
