Disenchantment Bay

Disenchantment Bay is an inlet in Alaska, United States, extending about 16 kilometers southwest from the mouth of Russell Fiord to Point Latouche at the head of Yakutat Bay. It takes its name from the Spanish explorer Alessandro Malaspina, who in 1792 called it Puerto del Desengano, bay of disenchantment, after finding it blocked by ice rather than the entrance to the legendary Northwest Passage he had hoped to find. During the earthquake of September 10, 1899, parts of the bay's shoreline were thrust upward by 47 feet 4 inches, the greatest vertical displacement ever recorded from an earthquake.
