The Sub-Paleogene surface is an ancient erosion surface found in southern England, appearing in places as a tilted plain and elsewhere as an unconformity beneath sediments of Paleogene age, formed by the erosion of English chalklands following a sea-level regression during the Maastrichtian age. Comparing the age of the last Maastrichtian chalk deposited with the age of the earliest overlying Paleogene sediment brackets the surface's formation to between about seventy-one to seventy-three million years ago and fifty-nine point three million years ago.
