Shighnan is a historic mountainous region divided between Afghanistan's Badakhshan Province and Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province, split by the Panj River, the upper Oxus, which forms the border between the two countries' portions. The Afghan district, centered on Qaleh Barpanjeh, has roughly 24,000 residents at elevations reaching 2,287 meters, while the Tajik side is centered on Khorugh; the region is home to the Shughni people, part of the broader Pamiri population, and its mountains have historically been mined for rubies.
