Schooley Peneplain

The Schooley peneplain is a peneplain in the eastern Appalachians extending from the U.S. state of New Jersey into Pine Mountain in Kentucky, taking its name from Schooley's Mountain where it appears as a flattish surface. The age and extent of its formation have been debated at length: some twentieth-century geologists held that the peneplain dipped eastward under the Atlantic Plain as an unconformity beneath Cretaceous sediments, implying an Early Cretaceous or Jurassic age, while others objected to that equivalence, and since the 2000s an Oligocene to middle Miocene age has instead been proposed, with uplift and dissection beginning in the late Miocene under this newer view.
