Petra tou Romiou (Aphrodite's Rock)

Petra tou Romiou, widely known as Aphrodite's Rock, is a sea stack standing just off the coast road between Paphos and Limassol in southwestern Cyprus. The stack was separated from the mainland by erosion in a stretch of sea that is generally rough, the same wave action that continues to shape it today. In Greek mythology the site marks the spot where Aphrodite rose from the sea foam, a story drawn from Hesiod's Theogony, and local tradition holds that swimming around the rock brings eternal beauty, although climbing it is now prohibited.
