Quita Sueño Bank

Quita Sueño Bank, claimed locally as Quitasueno, is a reef formation in the Caribbean Sea within the Archipelago of San Andres, Providencia and Santa Catalina, controlled by Colombia. The United States claimed the reef in 1869 under the Guano Islands Act and built a lighthouse there in 1919, holding its claim until relinquishing it by treaty signed in 1972 and effective in 1981. Nicaragua also claimed the reef, but the International Court of Justice affirmed Colombian sovereignty over it on November 19, 2012. The reef covers an area of about 290 square kilometers outside its twelve mile territorial zone.
