Hughes Reef

Coastal and Reef Features

Hughes Reef is a reef in the Union Banks of the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, submerged at high tide and exposed only at low tide. China, which administers the reef, has expanded it through land reclamation to 7.6 hectares and built a lighthouse atop a two story defense outpost there; the reef is also claimed by Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Vietnam, making it one of several disputed features in the Spratly group.
