Cenote Samula

Cenotes

Cenote Samula lies in the Dzitnup complex about one kilometer from Valladolid on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, a semi-open karst cavern formed by the collapse of limestone bedrock into a flooded chamber below. A single large opening in its domed ceiling admits sunlight that illuminates its clear turquoise water and the stalactites hanging from the rock above, while the roots of trees growing on the surface reach down through the opening far enough to touch the pool. Samula sits immediately beside its similarly enclosed sibling cenote, Cenote Xkeken, sharing the same Dzitnup site and drawing on the same regional karst aquifer. This entity documents Cenote Samula specifically as a geological formation, a karst cave cenote near Valladolid noted for the tree roots reaching down through its ceiling opening to the water below.
