Sedimentary and Rift Basins

Large sunken areas of the crust filled with layers of sediment, formed by stretching, subsidence or folding, and including offshore, rift and intermountain basins. A feature belongs here when its cited article calls it a sedimentary basin, rift basin, depression or hollow of this kind. It excludes the makhtesh erosion craters and glacial cirques. Basins are studied for their coal, oil and gas, groundwater and the long record of rock layers they hold.
